This workshop is an evidence based program developed at Stanford University which provides a toolkit of techniques to assist in self-management of chronic illnesses.

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy - Level 1 (Session 5 of 18)

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is an exercise program designed to help keep older adults active. Over this 8 week program, participants learn exercises to improve their strength, flexibility and balance. During each session, a prescribed set of 8 upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done along with warm-up and cool-down stretches. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.

FSMA Produce Safety Alliance

Fruit and vegetable growers and others interested in learning about produce safety, the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule and Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs). The PSA Grower Training Course is one way to satisfy the FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirement outlined in §112.22(c) that requires "At least one supervisor or responsible party for your farm must have successfully completed food safety training at least equivalent to that received under standardized curriculum recognized as adequate by the Food and Drug Administration." Includes PSA Training Manual ($50), Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO) Certificate of Completion ($35), light refreshments, lunch ($15) and speakers (~$100). Payment is due at the time of registration, and WILL NOT be accepted at the door. Chronic Disease Self-Management at UMC Bolivar (Session 4 of 6)

Description:

The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) is a community-based program which assists participants in maintaining quality of life when faced with chronic medical conditions. The CDSMP is provided in 2.5 hour sessions once a week for six weeks in community settings (e.g., senior centers, churches, libraries). People with different chronic health problems attend together. Workshops are facilitated by two trained leaders, one or both of whom deal with chronic diseases themselves. Subjects covered include: 1) techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation, 2) appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility and endurance, 3) appropriate use of medications, 4) communicating effectively with family, friends and health professionals, 5) nutrition, and 6) how to evaluate new treatments. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives. The program was developed by Stanford University and is funded by the Arthritis Foundation.
