    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy - Level 1 Butler Hospital (Session 16 of 16)

    Description:

    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) aims to provide inactive middle-aged and older adults with access to a safe, structured and effective exercise program capable of building muscle and increasing bone density, thus decreasing frailty, osteoporosis and the risk of falls. SSSH helps participants meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s physical activity recommendations.

    SSSH challenges participants through incremental increases in exercise volume and intensity. Led by a certified instructor, participants complete a warmup, a prescribed set of upper- and lower-body strengthening exercises and a cool-down at each class. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.

    Tai Chi for Arthritis & Fall Prevention (Session 14 of 16)

    Tai chi is one of the most effective, easy to learn, exercises for health of mind and body. The Tai Chi for Arthritis and Falls Prevention program is designed to improve multiple aspects of health through slow, gentle movements that can be practiced almost anywhere. The degree of exertion can be easily adjusted making this program suitable for adults of all levels and abilities. Published medical studies have shown benefits such as pain relief, improved balance and reduced falls. You will learn warm-up exercises, 6 Basic and 6 Advanced moves, and a cool down during 16 one hour classes. Harmony of inner and outer self comes from integrating mind and body, which can be achieved through the ongoing practice of tai chi.

    Description:

    Missouri’s SSSH program is designed to increase aging adults’ access to a safe, structured and effective strength training program. Over 8 weeks, participants learn exercises to improve their strength, flexibility and balance. During each session, a prescribed set of 8 upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done along with warm-up and cool-down stretches. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.

    SSSH is modeled after the evidenced-based StrongWomen program developed by researchers at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science at Tufts University. While the original Tufts program includes only women, University of Missouri Extension has adapted the curriculum to include men.

    Participants must register to attend event. For MU employees, 100 wellness points may be obtained per 8 week session if 14/16 classes are attended.

    We started with 10 participants, 8 showed up the first class. 4 the second class, and 2 the 3rd class. it was determined for the fidelity of the program that it was best to cancel the remaining 3 classes.

    The University of Missouri Extension is offering the six-week workshop "Show Me Better Health" licensed by Stanford University. This workshop will teach persons with chronic conditions and their caregivers the tools needed to design their own self-management program so they can live a longer and healthier life.

    Workshop participants will learn tips on how to eat well and exercise; how to manage their symptoms; how to relax and handle difficult emotions; develop effective problem-solving skills; how to work well with their doctor; and how to manage their medications. They will receive a copy of the workshop manual, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions and a relaxation cd.

    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy - Level 2 (Session 12 of 16)

    Missouri’s SSSH program is designed to increase aging adults’ access to a safe, structured and effective strength training program. Over 8 weeks, participants learn exercises to improve their strength, flexibility and balance. During each session, a prescribed set of 8 upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done along with warm-up and cool-down stretches. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.

    SSSH is modeled after the evidenced-based StrongWomen program developed by researchers at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science at Tufts University. While the original Tufts program includes only women, University of Missouri Extension has adapted the curriculum to include men.

    Participants must register to attend. For MU Employees, 100 wellness points can be obtained per 8 week session if 14/16 classes are attended.
