A Matter of Balance (Session 6 of 8)

When:  Monday, Nov. 6, 2017, 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Description:

A Matter of Balance is an eight week session designed to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults who are concerned about falling. The program was developed and evaluated at Boston University. Studies indicate that up to half of community dwelling older adults experience fear of falling, and that many respond to this concern by stopping certain activities. Being inactive results in loss of muscle strength and balance. It can also compromise social interaction and increase the risk for isolation, depression and anxiety. Fear of falling can actually contribute to falling. Join two trained facilitators to overcome the fear of falling, set realistic goals for increasing activity, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance.

Session topic:

Prioritize risk-taking behaviors and change to being safe behaviors. Learn to shift from negative to positive or helpful thinking. Review of exercises.
