    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy - Level 1 St. Francois Health Dept. (Session 6 of 16)

    Description:

    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) aims to provide inactive middle-aged and older adults with access to a safe, structured and effective exercise program capable of building muscle and increasing bone density, thus decreasing frailty, osteoporosis and the risk of falls. SSSH helps participants meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s physical activity recommendations.

    SSSH challenges participants through incremental increases in exercise volume and intensity. Led by a certified instructor, participants complete a warmup, a prescribed set of upper- and lower-body strengthening exercises and a cool-down at each class. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.

    Johnson County Cares Stakeholder Engagement (Session 4 of 11)

    Description:

    Johnson County Cares is an interagency stakeholder association that brings together various community organizations, churches, and other humanitarian organizations to develop strategies to address the challenges of the most vulnerable individuals in our County. Such individuals include the homelessness, mentally ill individuals, individuals with special needs, as well as families from a lower social-economic status.
    Issues tackled include providing shelter, finding jobs, hunger, as well as food insecurity. The overall goal is to get people in our county back on their feet to become self-sustaining.
    As a CES/CED, I provide educational guidance and facilitation to the organization and also, I connect the members with Educational resources in our office that can be used to meet the needs of the individuals in communities such as nutrition, gardening, and mental health education.

    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) program is designed to increase independent living older adults access to a safe, structured, and effective strength-training program. Over eight weeks, participants learn exercises to improve strength, flexibility and balance. At each class, a prescribed set of eight upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done along with warm-up and cool-down stretches. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.

    Session topic:

    Participants will complete a warm-up, 8 strength training exercises, and a cool-down that includes stretching.

    Chronic Disease Self-Management - Ralls County (Session 4 of 6)

    Description:

    Chronic Disease Self-management is a six week course.
    The teaching process makes this program effective. Classes are highly participatory. Mutual support and success builds participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.
    Participants make weekly action plans, share experiences, and help each other solve problems they encounter in creating and carrying out their self-management program. Physicians and other health professionals both at Stanford and in the community have reviewed all materials in the workshop.
    Subjects covered are:
    •Techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation.
    • Appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance
    • Appropriate use of medications
    • Communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals
    • Nutrition
    • Decision making
    • How to evaluate new treatments
    The class meets once a week for two hours for a total of six weeks.

    A Matter of Balance (Session 7 of 8)

    Matter of Balance is an award winning program that focuses on reducing the fear of falling and increasing the activity levels of older adults who may have concerns about falls. The 8-week course includes information on how to set realistic goals for increasing physical activity, how to view falls and the fear of falling as controllable, and how to make changes in your home and environment to prevent falls.

    This is a low-impact strength training program for people who are 50 or better.
