    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy - Level 1 Butler Hospital (Session 12 of 16)

    Description:

    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) aims to provide inactive middle-aged and older adults with access to a safe, structured and effective exercise program capable of building muscle and increasing bone density, thus decreasing frailty, osteoporosis and the risk of falls. SSSH helps participants meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s physical activity recommendations.

    SSSH challenges participants through incremental increases in exercise volume and intensity. Led by a certified instructor, participants complete a warmup, a prescribed set of upper- and lower-body strengthening exercises and a cool-down at each class. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.

    Cole and Miller County Long Term Recovery Committee meeting (Session 6 of 6)

    The Cole and Miller County Long Term Recovery Committee (CMC-LTRC) has a regular meeting Thursday mornings in Jefferson City at 8 am - 10 am

    We were formed as a coalition of faith based and service based organizations, including United Way, Catholic Charities, Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, and other groups. Willard Haley represents Miller County as the co-chairman, Rev. Bill Fogelsong is a co-chair of the faith-based subcommittee. Patricia Barrett is a co-secretary with Lynda Zimmerman, MU Extension, of Cole County. the Committee is reaching out to the city and any groups that might be serving unmet needs to communicate and cooperate together. The purpose of the meeting is to gather service providers and volunteer groups (like the City of Eldon and Miller County Emergency Management) to talk about our shared goals and get more folks from Miller County involved.     Tai Chi for Arthritis & Fall Prevention (Session 10 of 16)

    Description:

    Tai chi is one of the most effective, easy to learn, exercises for health of mind and body. The Tai Chi for Arthritis and Falls Prevention program is designed to improve multiple aspects of health through slow, gentle movements that can be practiced almost anywhere. The degree of exertion can be easily adjusted making this program suitable for adults of all levels and abilities. Published medical studies have shown benefits such as pain relief, improved balance and reduced falls. You will learn warm-up exercises, 6 Basic and 6 Advanced moves, and a cool down during 16 one hour classes. Harmony of inner and outer self comes from integrating mind and body, which can be achieved through the ongoing practice of tai chi.

    Missouri’s SSSH program is designed to increase aging adults’ access to a safe, structured and effective strength training program. Over 8 weeks, participants learn exercises to improve their strength, flexibility and balance. During each session, a prescribed set of 8 upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done along with warm-up and cool-down stretches. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.

    SSSH is modeled after the evidenced-based StrongWomen program developed by researchers at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science at Tufts University. While the original Tufts program includes only women, University of Missouri Extension has adapted the curriculum to include men.

    Participants must register to attend event. For MU employees, 100 wellness points may be obtained per 8 week session if 14/16 classes are attended.

    Adding Value Through Selection (Session 1 of 2)

    Description:

    To provide beef producers with practical tools to use when selecting a herd sire. The webinar will provide information on using genomic enhanced EPD's, so producers can select for improvement and change. The on farm sites will allow producers to learn what visual traits are are important when selecting herd sires and replacement females. They will also be able to apply what they learn from the Webinar with Dr. Decker. Attendees will practice selecting a herd sire, first only on visual appraisal, then using genetic information, attendees will be given a scenario in which to make the selection decision. The main goal is for producers to make their own selection decision using all available information that meets their objectives, to be able to produce predictable profitable cattle. Producers can view the Webinar at the Webster Co. MU Extension building or anywhere internet access is available. Attendees can choose to attend one or both farm sites, lunch will be served at the second farm visit of the day at Worthington Angus in Dadeville MO.
