Family Support Stipend and Loan Program

Provides a cash stipend for families with children under age 18 or low interest loans to families of individuals who have a developmental disability. Funds must be used for goods or services that benefit the person with the developmental disability.

MO-SPIN is a preschool outreach service from the Missouri School for the Blind. It is a home-based program to assist Missouri families with children who are visually impaired (birth to age 5).

A non-residential, community-based center for independent living. Services include information and referral, advocacy, peer support/advocacy and support groups, independent living skills training, personal assistance referral and management training, head injury services, deaf community services, ADA related information and technical assistance, special arts program, and transportation.

Social Security provides basic protection against the loss of family income due to the disability of a breadwinner. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) pays monthly checks to people who are elderly, disabled, or blind and do not own much or have much income. Children with disabilities are also often eligible.

An information and referral source that focuses on health care issues. This information services tries to help individual obtain health care and prenatal care services. Tel-Link may also be used by professionals. There is no cost for any direct Tel-Link service.

The library serving Boone County provides recorded books, large print materials, and large type on-line catalog terminals for persons with low-vision. They also offer the use of closed caption television to magnify library materials or personal documents.

The consortium accepts donations of used equipment that is in good condition (including wheelchairs, shower chairs, walkers, TDDs, communication boards, etc.). Persons eligible to borrow equipment must be living in Mid-Missouri, have documentation of physician or therapist recommendation of item, and not be eligible for assistance through Medicaid, private insurance, or other agencies.

A part of the Missouri State Library, this nationally funded library offers braille books, audio taped materials, and necessary equipment on loan free of charge. The items are delivered by mail with free return postage. Persons interested in using this services can call the Wolfner Library or the Columbia Public Library Outreach Services office at (573) 443-3161 to have an application mailed to you. A signature of authorization by a librarian or physician is required to determine need.
