September 2011 Crop Scouting Reports

Field Scouting Report for October 5…

Corn Harvest Underway; Weather Impacts Soybeans

Andy McCorkill, a livestock specialist with University of Missouri Extension, scouted soybean fields in the Arcola area on Oct. 5.

“Corn harvest is nearing completion in southwest Missouri and preparation for winter wheat planting is underway,” said McCorkill.

McCorkill said the corn he scouted was nearing harvest with various types of fungi and mold seen in tolerable levels. Lower than normal yields were noticed as well.

Soybeans were in the R6 and R7 stages with seed pods full and plants reaching maturity. Symptoms of heat and drought stress were apparent in most fields.

“Several factors such as planting date, maturity group, and variety traits have led to differing amounts of damage,” said McCorkill. “Smaller than normal seeds, smaller pods and reduced pod production are several weather related problems causing concern in most fields this year. Some past pod feeding was noticed but not in amounts to cause concern.”

With the fall harvest season underway, this will be the last crop scouting report of the season.
