WANTED for the Show-Me Market Showdown

How do you rate your grain marketing skills? Novice? Expert? Do you find futures markets confusing, maybe scary?

Let’s be blunt. If you buy or sell large volumes of grain, markets should scare you. The way to reduce fear is to become armed. Armed with the knowledge of actions you can take to reduce risk.

Have we got a deal for you! The Show-Me Market Showdown is a fantasy grain marketing game offered by the MU Extension Ag Business program. It kicks off July 14th and runs through Sept 19th. No risk. No cost. But the learning benefits are potentially huge.

This course is open to anyone who wants to learn more about how to reduce the stress of being exposed to the grain markets. We aim to enroll dozens, maybe hundreds of players from across the state.

The game is played through a slick website developed at the University of Minnesota called Commodity Challenge. Players start with some production in the bin and a crop in the ground. From there, each player executes a marketing strategy using the full range of marketing tools: cash sales, forward contracts, futures and/or options. Game prices are actual corn, soybean and wheat market prices, all moving in real-time.

This is not a sit-down lecture class. It’s better. The showdown is played 24/7 from any internet connection. Play competitively, or not. A leader board continuously ranks players positions, but you may remain anonymous.

Throughout the course of the game, players will receive risk management educational tools and tips from MU extension specialists via email and blogs.
