Macon-Shelby Master Gardeners

The Macon-Shelby Master Gardener (MSMG) Group was formed in February 2000. This group is composed of residents of Macon and Shelby counties.

The MSMG group is very active in a variety activities, including several beautification projects and community service activities.

Thirteen Master Gardeners from the Macon-Shelby Master Gardener Club reported 794.5 volunteer hours for 2007. The Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the value of volunteer time is $18.04. Using this figure, the Macon-Shelby Master Gardeners volunteered $14,332.78 worth of their time to projects benefiting the communities in Macon and Shelby counties.

Some of the projects included being a project leader for the 4-H horticulture project; presenting garden programs to clubs and organizations; assisting elderly persons with gardening and yard work; presenting garden programs to nursing home residents at Macon Health Care Center and Loch Haven Nursing Home; teaching gardening to school children; vegetable judge at a local fair and the Missouri State Fair; consultations and assisting the gardening public; and community beautification at a local church and the Blue Star Marker rose bed in Macon.

Throughout the year, Macon Master Gardeners attend continuing education workshops and programs and garden tours. This provides them with information they can use while providing service to their community.

Several club members participated in the 2007 State Master Gardener Conference held in Kirksville in September. The club organized an all day tour to Macon during the conference which featured several home gardens.
