The
Kirksville-Area Master Gardener Group (KAMG) was formed in December 1998. There
are 31 active
Master Gardeners from Adair County and two from Putnam County.
The thirty-three Kirksville Area Master Gardeners reported 2,468.75
volunteer hours in 2007. The Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics reports
the value of volunteer time is $18.04. Using this figure, the Kirksville
Master Gardeners volunteered $44,536.25 worth of their time to projects
benefiting Adair County and the City of Kirksville.Some of their projects include planting and maintaining
flower beds and other plantings at the Veteran’s Memorial, Brashear
Park, Prairie Garden at Rotary Park, other Kirksville parks, the Energy
Trail, Truman State University Clock Garden, Adair County Public
Library, local churches, rose garden at Adair County Courthouse and the
Lion’s braille garden among many others.
Other service provided by Master Gardeners includes
assisting with the Garden n’ Grow Youth Garden program; assisting
elderly friends and neighbors with their yard and gardens; consultations
and providing gardening advice to the general public; and planning and
putting on the 2007 State Master Gardener Conference that was held in
Kirksville. The club ends their year with a Christmas party and potluck
dinner.
The club meets the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm
at the Adair County Extension Center unless notified. From time to time
the club does meet at the home of a Master Gardener. Master Gardeners
from other clubs are welcome to attend meetings and programs. |

Meetings and Social
Activities: The KAMG has a monthly
business meeting with educational programs or activities of interest to
gardeners. They also have several social activities
throughout the year, including a summer potluck dinner and a holiday party in December.
Adair County Library Sign Landscaping Project:
The KAMG designed, installed and maintains a planting around the Adair
County Public Library sign. The landscape was installed in 1999 and was expanded
in 2003.
Beautification Projects:
Brashear Park: The KAMG, in cooperation with the City of
Kirksville, designed, installed and maintains a landscape near the gazebo at
Brashear Park. The landscape was installed in 1999 and was expanded in 2000.
Another corner of the park was landscaped in 2002.
Veterans Memorial Park Beautification Project: The KAMG,
in cooperation with the City of Kirksville, designed, installed and maintains a
landscape at Veteran's Memorial Park on Highway 63. The Landscape was
installed in 2002. A small prairie garden was added nearby.
Other Community Beautification Projects: The KAMG planted
a rose garden at the Adair County Courthouse in 2001. They planted daylily beds
in several city parks in 2003. Members of the KAMG's have planted several flower
beds around the Adair County Extension Center building.
Kirksville Farmers' Market:
The KAMG's staff a booth at the Kirksville farmers' market that
provides horticulture information to the public. The Farmers' Market takes place every Saturday morning from
7-11 a.m. from the first weekend in May to the last weekend in October.
The location is the north parking lot of the Adair County Courthouse.
Kirksville Garden 'N Grow
Program: The Kirksville Garden 'N Grow (GnG) program (formerly the
Junior Master Gardener Program) is a summer gardening program for youth. This
educational program has been held at the Adair County Extension Center every
year since 2000. Several KAMG members are actively involved with the program.
KAMG Garden Tour: Every other year the Kirksville Area Master Gardener (KAMG) Club
has a garden tour featuring several gardens around Kirksville. The first KAMG garden tour was held on June 4, 2000 in
Kirksville. The tour showcased seven gardens and the Brashear Park beautification
project. The second KAMG garden tour was held June 22, 2003. Proceeds from the tour will
be used to help fund other club projects and provide scholarships for
the Garden N' Grow Program. The next Garden Tour will be held
June 25, 2006.
Nursing Home Garden Program: Each month KAMG's along with horticulture specialist
Jennifer Barnes-Schutter, provide gardening programs for residents at two
Kirksville nursing homes.
