2009 Garden 'n Grow participants get ready to plant their gardens.
Garden 'n Grow
Every summer University of Missouri Extension offers Garden n’ Grow, a youth gardening program for children ages 9 to 14. This is a great opportunity for local youth to grow their own vegetables and learn about horticulture. The program also encourages the discovery of science and nature through gardening.
The Adair County Garden n' Grow program will start Monday, May 21 and 24 after school from 3:15-4:45. We will not meet on Memorial Day. Beginning May 31, we will meet from 9:30-11:00 a.m. on Monday and Thursdays through August 13. The cost to participate in the Adair County Garden n’ Grow pro-gram is $30, which includes a lesson book, plants and seeds, refreshments, certificate and t-shirt.
Participants will have a garden plot where they will grow their own vegetables. Not only will the youth get hands-on experience with vegetable gardening, they will also learn about seeds, soil, how plants grow, insects, diseases, weeds, cooking with vegetables, nutrition and many other topics. The vegetables that the children grow are theirs to take home. Excess produce from the garden is donated to the Adair County Salvation Army Food Pantry.
The program is limited to the first 10 youth to register. For more information contact Jennifer Schutter, horticulture specialist, schutterjl@missouri.edu or call 660-665-9866.
