Northeast Region Programs for June 1, 2007 through May 30, 2008 This is a list of the programs, events and activities that MU Extension faculty plan to conduct in the Northeast Region between June 1, 2007 and May 30, 2008. To read a description of any program on the list, select (click on) the program name. You will be taken to the program description. If you want to know when a program, event or activity will be conducted, go to the MU Extension Statewide Calendar. Search for the program by name. At the Statewide Calendar, you may also search for the program by name only within the Northeast Region. If the program, activity or event you want to attend is not on the Statewide Calendar, contact your local (county) MU Extension County Program Director for the information. Resources for Environmental Quality in Northeast Missouri Biotechnology Education - Programming on herbicide- and insect-resistant crops, and issues associated with their use (effectiveness, stewardship, marketability, and profitability). Care and Maintenance of On-Lot Sewage Treatment Systems - this workshop teaches how to reduce costs to homeowners, minimize self-contamination of home water supplies plus the surrounding watershed and reduce closing time on homes sales. Conservation Field Day - A one day event held for local 6th graders dealing with many aspects of conservation. Some activities may include the stream table, enviroscape, rain simulator, soil conservation practices, wildlife preservation. Considerations for Countryside Living - A workshop alerting the potential rural non-farm dweller to some extra duties they will encounter currently provided by the municipality in most incorporated areas and on a limited basis by home-owners associations in some rural settings. Includes environmental considerations dealing with drinking water quality (supply protection, waste water treatment and storm water management), solid waste management and how to be a good neighbor. Environmental Education Day - An activity of the North Fork Project of the Clarence Cannon Wholesale Water Commission and University of Missouri Extension in cooperation with the US Army Corps of Engineers. Students and teachers grades 4-8 are invited to participate as representatives from many different agencies discuss and show how their industry impacts the environment and what steps they are taking to improve the quality of our environment. Healthy Indoor Air - This is a national consumer education program concerned with increasing awareness among consumers and helping in improving the quality of indoor air in homes. This project was developed to provide basic but comprehensive information to consumers on how to get a handle on indoor air quality. In Missouri this program is taught by trained extension educators in different parts of the state. This program covers 10 indoor air hazards that consumers have to watch out for. Pesticide Applicator Training - Under a cooperative agreement with Missouri Department of Agriculture, University of Missouri Extension personnel provide training necessary for private pesticide applicators to receive their license, which is necessary for purchasing and using restricted-use pesticides. Training covers pest ID, application methods, environmental safety, personal safety, and emergency first aid. Project Map - Students and teachers are invited to participate as representatives from many different agencies discuss and show how their industry impacts the environment and what steps they are taking to improve the quality of our environment. Many activities from Project Wet are presented on this day. Scouting Training - Training in crop scouting, covering pest (weed, insect, and disease) identification, as well as control measurers (cultural, mechanical, biological, and chemical). Soil Testing - is a service provided by the University of Missouri Extension. For a fee anyone can have soil sent to the University for testing and recommendations. Nutrient and lime recommendations, ensuring optimum profit, prevention of over-fertilization, and maintenance of high yields are some of the goals of the soil testing service. Watershed Protection - Work with the Soil & Water conservation District to provide general watershed protection programming (terraces & structures, no-till& cover crops, nutrient management). This programming includes the annual Turf Issues...Management Strategies for Golf Courses, Athletic Fields, and Open Spaces and Western Illinois-Northeast Missouri No-Till and Crop management Seminar.
