Macon County Master
Gardeners' Tour
You will start your tour at a country garden that is a
wonderland of perennials as well as a mixture of robust
annuals. Learn how these gardeners use homegrown fertilizer
and a system of hoses to fit the flowers’ water needs. See
the many “you-name-it” creations this gardener has made with
his expertise in bricks and mortar.
Your next stop will be a 2.2-acre plot of garden creativity
and beauty. This large garden features numerous perennials,
annuals, trees, shrubs, vegetables and fruits.
Enjoy lunch at
Long Branch State Park, which includes a
160-acre remnant of native prairie. A park naturalist will
give an overview of the native plants growing in the park.
After lunch you will tour a beautiful and expansive yard
that includes a wide variety of perennials and some
vegetables. See the greenhouse and fruit trees, and hear the
soothing sounds of running water and the peaceful motion of
fish swimming in the pond. There are many shrubs for the
birds that inhabit numerous bird houses on the property.
Your last stop will be the West Orchard, which is a very
large and work-intensive orchard that produces a plentiful
supply of fruits. Major production centers on apples, but
peaches, pears, plums, and apricots are also grown.
Work is ongoing as to the productive use of apples that fall
to the ground.
