Kirksville Area Half-Day Tours
Morning Tours:
8-11:30
a.m.
All tours will depart
from the Days Inn. Tours 1 and 3 will include box lunches at
the new Missouri Department of Conservation building (3500
S. Baltimore). Tour 2 will include box lunches at Brashear
Park.
Tour 1 -
Country Living This tour will stop at
Brashear Park, where a gazebo is surrounded by garden
beds maintained by Master Gardeners. The next stop is
at Rotary Park, where the
Veteran’s Memorial was
landscaped by Master Gardeners. Then you will visit two
home gardens, including a beautiful rose garden and a
shady perennial garden with a water feature. Note how
native plants can be mixed effectively with exotic
species. Walking is fairly easy, with mostly level
sidewalks and grass.
Tour 2 – Town and Gown
See what’s blooming at the
solar clock garden and tour the greenhouse on the
campus of Truman State University. Then stop at the
downtown Kirksville Farmers’ Market. Tour Rotary Park,
where the
Veteran’s Memorial was landscaped by Master
Gardeners. Next, visit a shady perennial garden that
mixes native plants with exotic species. The final stop
will be at Brashear Park, where a gazebo is surrounded
by garden beds maintained by Master Gardeners. Walking
is fairly easy, with mostly level sidewalks and grass.

3 - From Seeds to Soil
Start your day at the downtown
Kirksville
Farmers’ Market. Then see the award-winning
Garden ‘n’
Grow program at the Adair County Extension
grounds. Finally, visit Truman State University’s farm
to see what’s growing in the vineyard and other
plots. You will also hear about a unique composting
project. After the tour enjoy
salsa, pickles, tomato
jelly and tomato juice that was grown and made on the
farm.
Walking is fairly easy, with mostly level
sidewalks and flat ground.
Afternoon Tours: 1-4:30
p.m.

4 – Health and Wellness This tour
begins with a stop at two peaceful church gardens. Next,
visit the campus of
A.T. Still University, birthplace of
osteopathic medicine, where you can stroll through an
historic medicinal plant garden and visit a
museum. Then
experience the Energy Trail, which was designed to promote
fitness of mind, body, and spirit for all ages. Finally,
enjoy a lovely home garden featuring many perennial beds,
shrubs and trees. Walking is fairly easy, with mostly level
sidewalks and grass.
Tour
5 - On the Lone Prairie This tour includes
stops at two beautiful home gardens featuring many perennial
beds, shrubs and trees. One of them overlooks a pond. The
other incorporates rustic accents into a garden shared with
wildlife. You will be inspired by the creative use of
annuals and tropicals. Finally, travel into the country to
view the unspoiled acres of native prairie where a nature
photographer created his field of dreams by sowing
wildflowers. Experience the solitude of the grasslands.
Walking is moderate, with some slopes.
Workshop
– Making Garden Memories
How do you make those
garden memories last? In the first part of this
workshop you will learn how to make leaf castings with
cement. Then take a short break and stroll the Energy
Trail, which was designed to promote fitness of mind,
body, and spirit for all ages. In the second part of
the workshop you will learn how to dry flowers and
create a note card. Materials will be provided to take
your projects home with you. (Note: You will need to
provide your own transportation to this workshop. It
will be at St. Andrews Apartments, 500 S. Osteopathy.
