Livestock Symposium 2001
Kirksville, Missouri

Between 12 to15 hundred people attended the Livestock Symposium held in Kirksville this year.  The broad-spectrum program attracted producers and industry allies from throughout the state of Missouri and the Midwest.  The program featured Internationally known experts on Horses, Beef, Cattle, Sheep, Meat Goats, Swine and Forages.  Other topics included a seminar on Stock Dog Training and Value-Added enterprises like Lease Hunting, etc.

The Program kicked off Friday evening (November 30) with a co-sponsored Certified Angus beef supper.  It was followed by Dr. Ron Plain, University of Missouri, who talked about the "Future of Animal Agriculture in Missouri" and Dave Nichols of Nichols Farms, Bridgewater, Iowa who talked about the need for producers to "Partner Up for Profit".  Derry Brownfield concluded the program Friday night with his views on what's happened to agriculture over the years.

The Saturday program had over 800 attendees.   A Governor's Style Luncheon, courtesy of statewide commodity groups in Missouri and the Livestock Symposium committee was very popular as attested to by the long lines.   The educational programs included nationally known speakers on all species of livestock and forages.  It also included interactive TV sessions on horses, forages and swine topics.  Saturday's programs concluded with entertainment by Baxter Black, Cowboy Poet.  A trade show was also held in conjunction with the Symposium.

The Livestock Symposium was the combined efforts of the 22 member planning committee made up of producers and agency personnel (University of Missouri Extension and Missouri Department of Agriculture) with over 100 community businesses and industry sponsors.  The purpose of the program was to provide those involved in animal agriculture updated information, a chance to visit and learn from one another informally and formally, have access to the latest commercial products and information related to agriculture and to "have a good time" from the food and entertainment provided.

The Livestock Symposium Committee is presently in the process of summarizing the hundreds of evaluations submitted by those attending.   If you'd like to be on the LS mailing list please send Bruce Lane, Regional Livestock Specialist and e-mail at lanen@missouri.edu and put Livestock Symposium in the subject line.  Or you can mail your request to Bruce Lane, Adair County Extension Center, 503 E.
