Insect Friends of Roses
When the term "insect" is mentioned keep in mind that there are literally millions of them so no single entomology textbook can discuss all of them much less the short presentation you are listening to now. ***For purposes of this discussion, "insect" will be an umbrella term to include non-insects such as spiders, mites, etc. which canít pass the physical to be considered genuine insects.***
The Good Guys
These are natural predators of insects destructive to roses and they include lady beetles (ladybugs), assassin bugs, green lacewings, praying mantids, parasitic wasps and predatory mites. Many of these insects can be purchased by mail order or in garden centers for release in the garden. They are nomads, though, and once the bad guys have been eliminated, they will move on to another buggy buffet. While they are in your garden, use of any insecticides will be out of the question. Insecticides recognize and deal with insects but do not discriminate between the good guys and the bad guys.
