White Wheat

Development of hard White Winter Wheat is now the Focus of the KSU wheat improvement team.

In recent years the farm value of wheat has decreased. As we move toward a world market, there has not been an increase in demand for hard red winter wheat.

About one-half of the world’s wheat supply is consumed in the form of noodles, as compared to bread in this country. Kansas’ red wheats make horrible noodles. The new hard white wheats can make acceptable products for the world trade.

KSU has released the following hard White Winter Wheat varieties:

  • Arlin
  • Betty
  • Heyne
  • Lakin
  • Trego
Other surrounding states have released varieties of hard White Winter Wheat varieties that may be suitable for production in Kansas.

It appears, Hard, White, Winter wheat will be the wheat of the future.
